Hello there!
As it turns out, it’s been seven months since my last newsletter. Wow. If you don’t keep up with me on Instagram, I’m sorry to keep you hanging for so long.
Fortunately, one of the best ways to catch up is over a warm beverage. I have a freshly brewed cup of Darjeeling. Hope you have something delightful too.
Coming Soon!
In January, my short story “The Dragon of Twilight Glade” was selected for the Nightshade Publishing’s Balloon Children anthology. I’m waiting for the anthology’s official release date, but it should be in the next few weeks. I’m looking forward to sharing the story of Elora, the dragon, and the magical world hidden beyond her closet with you!
That’s not the only story coming soon. Another short story was accepted for the “Though We Bleed” anthology with Twenty Hills Publishing. It’s scheduled to come out July 4, 2024. I’ll share more details about it (including the short story’s final title) as I have them!
Coming Eventually…
My two main WIPs are making progress. My inspirational non-fiction (maybe-memoir?) work is gaining traction. It’s moving very slowly, but I’m happy with where it’s headed.
My time travel, science fantasy novel is currently sitting just under 13,000 words—more than I’ve written of one story in a long time. This one is just fun to write, which makes it a perfect complement to my other, much heavier WIP.
To celebrate crossing 10,000 words, here’s an excerpt from Chapter 1.
“Stop right there.”
Rebecca’s heart stopped. She turned around. The man who had been following her through the city stood at the entrance of the alley with a gun pointed at her.
“I’ve been looking for you, Rebecca Kestrel,” he continued, marching towards her.
Now that he was closer, she examined all of his features. He wasn’t familiar at all. “Who are you?”
"Oh, I'm not making that mistake," he said.
Rebecca forced herself to stay calm as she brushed her hand against device on her wrist. In the process, she activated an emergency signal. Hopefully, her friend Petra would be able to devise a plan quickly.
"Do I know you?" Rebecca asked.
"Not yet," the man answered. "And now you never will. I'm going to end all my problems before they start."
He leveled the gun at her. Her heart raced as she raised both hands and backed away slowly. If only she could get to her ship…
He followed her. "Stop now."
She froze. What was she going to do? Then Rebecca's wrist buzzed. Morse code. Close eyes. What? Rebecca obeyed. As she did, the whole alley lit up as though she was standing inside a lightbulb. The man groaned. As quickly as it came, it vanished. Rebecca opened her eyes. The man's hands covered his face as he tried to force his vision to clear.
This was her chance. Rebecca dashed to her ship. The door was already open, revealing the interior despite the outside being hidden. She slammed the button to close the door behind her and ran to the helm.
"Rebecca! Rebecca!" Petra shouted.
Rebecca hit the com button. "I'm here!"
"Good! Coordinates are in. Get out of there!"
Rebecca turned the dials and pulled the lever. She braced herself for the feeling of plummeting through time. Before it came, though, the whole ship jarred and the lights flickered. Then Rebecca felt like she was falling sideways through time instead.
And this is just the beginning of Rebecca’s adventures. I can’t wait to share more!
Until next time,
BRR Cannon
This is all so exciting! What a punchy, tantalizing snippet.
I love seeing all your upcoming projects!!
